What Are We Reading?

By Emily Evans-Miller   As the year comes to a close, we’re looking forward to taking some time with our families to celebrate the holiday season. That free time will give us a chance to catch up on one of our favorite activities in the office: reading. The busy season can keep us from our personal books, but we’re excited to get started on (or finish up!) these titles. Read the full list below for some new book suggestions for yourself!

Daniel Wheatley, Senior Production Editor

The Hotel Between by Sean Easley and Heart of Thorns by Bree Barton
Middle grade author extraordinaire Daniel reads plenty books in his own genre to stay up on the times. He recommends these two, which are his most recent reads.

Susan Roberts, Senior Production Editor

The Illustrated Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling and The Land of Yesterday by K.A. Reynolds
Resident HP nerd Susan is revisiting one of her favorites in the series, thanks to the new illustrated edition of Rowling’s classic. She highly recommends giving them a try to see the magic brought to life.

Nina Spahn, Senior Production Manager

The Family Fang by Kevin Wilson

Nina’s rereading what she touts as a modern American classic.

Kristin Perry, Director of Author Services

Word by Word: The Secret Life of Dictionaries by Kory Stamper
Kristin is planning on picking up this exploration of language and the intensity of writing for dictionaries during her holidays.

Rachel Sutton, Production Editor

Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman and Dark Matter by Blake Crouch
Rachel has been traveling a lot lately, spending time in Austin. Her plane flights have been the perfect chance to catch up on reading.

Kiley Garrett, Production Editor

Wolf in White Van by John Darnielle
Darnielle is the singer/songwriter for the band The Mountain Goats. Kiley loves reading fiction by writers who practice other forms and seeing how they treat craft differently based on the medium they’re working in.

Jasmine White, Graphic Designer

Webcomics The Devil is a Handsome Man and Siren’s Lament
Jasmine reads these every day during lunch to give her brain a break from designing our beautiful books.

Matt Gonsalves, Graphic Designer

America Again: Re-becoming The Greatness We Never Weren’t by Stephen Colbert
Matt’s tackling Colbert’s satire. He read half of it when it first came out,  so he’s going back to finish it this time around!

Michelle Webber, Senior Marketing Manager

Wizard’s First Rule by Terry Goodkind

Michelle follows the rule that for every two new books she reads, she either rereads one from her past, or discovers a classic old novel. This one is from her past!

Emily Evans-Miller, Content Marketing Manager

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han and The Lover’s Dictionary by David Levithan
Emily, a die hard Rom-Com fan, loves reading books that break from typical storytelling patterns. She’s about to read To All the Boys (because of the amazing Netflix adaptation) once she finishes The Lover’s Dictionary, a love story told entirely through dictionary entries.

Chris Baker, Marketing Manager

The Fifth Beatle: The Brian Epstein Story by Vivek J. Tiwary and Andrew C. Robinson
Chris is reading a graphic novel about the untold story of Beatles’ manager, which is fitting considering Chris is in a band during his time away from the office.

Kevin Boston, Marketing Manager

Various Articles about The War of the Roses
Kevin loves learning about historical events and expanding his knowledge. While he didn’t have specific article recommendations, he does recommend exploring something new this holiday season.

Will Oney, Retail Account Manager

Calculus 6th Edition by Swokowski, Olinick, and Pence
Will loves math (unlike the rest of the Mascot Books staff, except for bookkeeping of course!) and is getting ready to go back to school to finish his physics degree.

Abby Simpson, Assistant Bookkeeper

But What If We’re Wrong?: Thinking About the Present As If It Were the Past by Chuck Klosterman and Becoming by Michelle Obama
Abby is our resident biography and memoir lover. She’s eager to read every new release in those categories, like Michelle Obama’s new book!

Bowie Roberts, Mascot Extraordinaire

Llama Llama, Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney
Bowie loves reading rhyming books with his mom, Susan. Check out these adorable pictures of the two of them reading during one of Bowie’s visits to the office:
