Emily Lowe, Public Healthican
Emily Lowe becomes a surprising sleuth when she is asked by her boss to stealthily investigate the deaths of seven children. It’s January 1920, and the hard-working Lowe has been on the job for only a few months as assistant to the director of the Bureau of Child Hygiene at the New York City Department of Health. She is committed to making a difference in a case that has her colleagues befuddled and racing to halt a new infectious disease before it goes uncontained through the Big Apple. Lowe has no experience in this area, few connections in the Jewish immigrant community where the tragedies happened, and is not in position to succeed. But she finds help in longtime public health investigator Edward Morelli. Together, the pair races against the clock in a packed city full of possible suspects. What remains is Lowe’s heroic pride in being able to call herself a “public healthican.”
